What Are Bump Keys?
Bump keys are specially cut keys that can bypass the security mechanisms built into traditional pin and tumbler locks. Bump keys are also referred to as “999 keys” because all of their ridges are cut to the maximum depth (999) in a key-making machine. These keys are relatively easy to produce (it typically takes less than five minutes to cut a bump key), and not very difficult to acquire.
How Does a Bump Key Work?
Bump keys interact with the internal mechanisms of pin and tumbler locks by briefly aligning the pins through a quick application of force. In a standard lock, the pins are arranged in stacks consisting of driver pins and key pins, held in place by springs. A properly cut key aligns these pins to create a "shear line," allowing the lock to turn smoothly.
A bump key, however, is designed to transfer kinetic energy to the pins when lightly tapped with an object like a small hammer. This causes the pins to momentarily jump into alignment, forming a temporary shear line and allowing the lock to turn.
